Obama Administration To Announce Free Preventive Services Under Healthcare Law

The Wall Street Journal (7/14) reports the Obama Administration plans to announce new regulations about which preventive services health insurers must provide to customers free of charge. The regulations fall under the new healthcare law. It is anticipated that cancer and blood pressure screenings, measures to combat obesity, vaccinations, and smoking cessation measures will be provided without co-pays. Yet, in spite of efforts by advocates, birth control is not expected to be among these free services.

CQ HealthBeat (7/13) reported that First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will join HHS officials Wednesday, July 14 "to unveil new regulations requiring insurers to eliminate cost-sharing such as copays for preventive services." The rules affect insurers on Sept. 23, and the law "also calls for Medicare to eliminate cost-sharing for preventive services starting in January."
